Canterbury
Canterbury's skyline is dominated by the wonderful Canterbury Cathedral, the oldest in England. The ancient ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church form Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage Site, while other ancient ruins such as the Castle are reminders of the city's history, heritage and culture.
Canterbury is also a modern and vibrant city - with its universities and colleges ensuring there’s always a buzz about the place. There are plenty of shops around Canterbury if you feel like a bit of retail therapy, or the Marlow Theatre if you want to take in a show. There is also the nearby Howletts Wild Animal Park for something a bit different.
It’s the perfect place to pound the pavements and explore, before heading back to our welcoming pub hotel in Whitstable to recuperate with a delicious dinner.
Whitstable
Whitstable itself is renowned for its seafood - particularly its oysters - as well as its harbour, built in 1832. It remains a fascinating insight into the town’s heritage, and today hosts a prosperous fish market.
Every July there is the popular Oyster Festival, which attracts visitors from all over the world, while August’s two-day Regatta includes fun, music, displays and seaborne events for all the family. The Regatta’s Grand Firework Display is a truly impressive sight - best viewed from the Tankerton Slopes, directly in front of the Marine Hotel. Grab a glass of something cold and delicious and watch the spectacle from our gorgeous garden pub.
The town also features a museum, art galleries, independent boutique shops and a former manor house, which features a coffee shop and beautiful gardens. Whitstable is only a 20-minute drive to Canterbury, and 90 minutes by train from London.
